Project 2

  • Early diagnosis of solid cancers

RESEARCH PROJECT TO BE FUNDED

This research project has already been approved by the Scientific Committee

Clinical validation of an early screening method for invasive solid cancers

Cancer kills 150 000 people every year in France (over 400 deaths per day). One in three men and one in four women will die of cancer and we know that the chances of recovery depend on the very early diagnosis of the cancer.

In fact, only « invasive cancers » kill patients, since localised cancers can be surgically eradicated and cured.

This project involves the detection and characterisation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) as a tool for early screening for invasive cancers. In fact, some frequent types of cancer (colorectal, breast, pancreatic, etc...) are very often diagnosed in their metastatic stage, which lowers their chances of being cured. It is known that CTCs circulate in the blood for years before the formation of metastases, thus their sensitive and specific detection may save many lives, permitting a very early diagnosis and treatment of cancer!! STL is looking for funding (550 K€) to carry out the clinical validation (3 years) of this test for early diagnosis of solid cancers.
